Road Maintenance Project

In June of 2015, ARDA partnered with Mrs. Mcleod Darpoh, the Development Council of Arthington and the Concerned Citizens of Arthington in raising funds for a short term road maintenance project. The goal was to perform maintenance work on the Virginia/Clayashland/Millsburg/Arthington roadway to allow passage during the 2015 raining season. ARDA contributed a total of $884.00 towards this effort. Total cost to date is $2795.00. Additional maintenance work such as patching with gravels and labor to spread the gravel will be required throughhout the raining season if the road is to remain passable.

ARDA will continue to collaborate with Mrs. Mcleod Darpoh, the Development Council of Arthington and the Concerned Citizens of Arthington to convert this into an annual road maintenance project. This effort would allow the road to be passable year round, especially during the raining season. ARDA is convinced that the maintenance of this roadway is critical to the revitalization of Arthington’s economy.

Below are pictures of the current road condition and the effects to improve it. ARDA will continue to provide updates on the road campaign as it becomes available.

Arthington Central School (Reading Room Enhancement)

Thanks to a local school in Winston Salem NC, Dr. Garmai Hill Gaye and Miss Contance Hill, four barrels of books were shipped to Liberia for the Reading Room. Now that the Reading Room building is completed the next phase of this project is furnishing and equipping the Reading Room. This involves determining the best source of electricity (installation of a solar panel being one), staffing, purchasing of a computer, procurement of chairs, tables, and other library materials and equipment. Our goal is to complete this phase of the project in 2016.

We are proud to announce the completion of the Reading Room (library) building. The Reading Room Project Pictures are below to view construction and final stages of the build. The Reading Room building was ARDA’s primary project for Convention year 2011 – 2012. The Reading Room is named in honor of one of Arthington’s outstanding citizen, Mrs. Parthena Laura Askie, who celebrated her 100th birthday on November 22, 2012. The library was dedicated in March of 2013.

Arthington Central School (Grade 1-3 Classroom Project) Wilkin Tyler Kindergarten School

During Director Flomo’s visit to Arthington in 2012, he observed that the classrooms for Grades 1-3 were uninhabitable. According to Director Flomo’s report “The building has dirt floors, the walls are not covered, one side of the building has fallen off, and blackboards are completely useless”

ARDA discovered that there was an unfinished building on the Arthington Central Schooll campus that was being constructed as teachers quarters. It was decided to complete this building and convert rooms into classrooms.

The building has 2 apartments. The roof for the first appartment was completed during Convention Year 2011-2012. This classroom will host the Wilkin Tyler Kindergarten School. Phase II of this projects involves the following:

– Complete roofing of the second apartment

– Finishing of the building (Walls, Windows, Floors)

– Furnishing of the classroom (Table Chairs, Blackboard)

Arthington Central School (Teachers Recruitment and Training)

ARDA recognizes the urgent need for qualify teachers in the Arthington schools and have decided to undertake a two year project with the goal of recruiting qualify math, science and technology teachers and to conduct training and development of the current pool of teachers. This project was initiated in Convention Year 2012-2013 and is scheduled to complete in Convention Year 2013-2014. Phase I of the project will involve conducting a feasibility study. This will focus on assessment of current teacher’s skill level, Identifying schools with the greatest need, establishing a relationship with the Ministry of Education to determine its plans for enhancing education in Arthington and identifying other entities that ARDA can partner with in this effort. Results from the study will determine how other phases of the project are implemented.
